A-Level results and grades explained: Is a D or an E a pass?

Students and their families can be anxious about RESULTS Day.

This year was not easy for teachers and exams were cancelled.

Coronavirus caused the cancellation of summer exams this year.

What is the A-level pass criteria for an E or D?

A pass at A-Level is still possible with an E or D, but this will lead to lower UCAS points.

One of the five grades that indicate a pass are A, B, D, C, or D. A (and A*), is the highest, and E the lowest.

To meet the passing criteria, you need to get at least an E grade.

Students who fail to pass will see the result on their sheet as "Not classified" or something similar.

What is the Uniform Mark Scale? How does it work?

The Uniform Mark Scale converts grades to marks.

Exam boards use it to eliminate any variation in the difficulty of coursework and exams.

The UMS will counterbalance a low score on a very difficult exam so that you get a score that is relative to the difficulty of your exam.

This allows for comparability of results between subjects and exam series.

Your Provisional Statement Of Results includes both the "raw", and "uniform" marks.

There were no exams in 2021, and the grades were decided by teachers. This could make things look different.

What are UCAS Points?

UCAS points (or Tariff value) translate your qualifications into a numerical number that can be compared with other courses and added up alongside other A-levels or qualifications.

The UCAS Tariff value for most UK qualifications is approximately the same as that of your grade.

Higher grades earn more UCAS points.

Points can be applied to a variety of qualifications, and you will get as many points per grade.

Here you can find out how to calculate your UCAS Tariff points.

What happens if I fail an examination?

Covid's cancellation of summer A-Level exams has made this year very different.

If you fail a test, or are not able to do well on a test, there are many options.

Remember that even if you did not achieve the required grades, it is possible to still be accepted at one of your universities.

First, check with your options to determine if there is a place available or if you were offered a course that suits your grade.

You might also consider Clearing Options.

Students who feel unfairly marked or have had their grades calculated incorrectly can appeal for free.

You can do this through your school. They will contact the appropriate exam board.

Applicants to higher education who do not receive the offer that they chose as their first choice for higher education must appeal before August 16.

You may still be able to achieve a higher grade by taking the exam in autumn.

Exam regulator Ofqual announced that final A-level exams would be offered in autumn depending on coronavirus. This would allow students to improve their grades.

If students request them, they will receive replacement certificates for their summer results. Marking and appeals will continue as usual.
